Abstract
The present paper is based on investigation of a rich collection of brachiopods collected from the Tithonian-Berriasian limestones of the Pieniny Klippen Belt, Western Carpathians, Poland. Stratigraphic ranges of these brachiopods were established by comparison with ammonite and Calpionellid zonation. Though of limited stratigraphic value, the Tithonian-Berriasian brachiopods may be used for local stratigraphic purposes and facies correlation. Opportunistic (r-selected), dominant brachiopods of the family Pygopidae occur in the majority of lithofacies; they show eurybathyal preferences. Distribution of other brachiopods is depent on depth changes and the character of palaeoenvironment. Mass occurrence of brachiopods on intraoceanic Czorsztyn Ridge was probably connected with upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich bottom waters. Systematic revision of several brachiopod taxa, e.g. Nucleata nucleata (Schlotheim) and Karadagithyris bilimeki (Suess), is prsented.
